I did and will again try the Extreme as the primary. from what I can gather I may need a computer to set up the second network but it doesn't need to continue to be attached. I answer in case someone can benefit from my experience, although it does seem a bit more luck than skill. although I still would like to play my itunes library on a stereo and don't know if the Express or Extreme would help. so my question has become a bit academic. eventually it did not need to be restarted and worked as before. what has happened since is the Express and cable modem needed to unplugged and restarted (cable modem first to be powered on according to Apple) a few times a day to keep the wireless working. which is why I thought about a 'repeater' to make the the signal more powerful. a second tower a few feet from the laptop did not work. two floors below a laptop could get a weak signal. I went through the various processes of resetting the Express. the cable modem worked when directly plugged in to a tower. which is why I have an Extreme and an Express). (it is quite stupid on my part how long we had two high speed providers in the house, I just kept my provider when I moved my business home. the wireless network was working it stopped one day. what I was having trouble with was getting the wireless network to work. In that case, the AirPort Express could not "extend" the wireless network because it is not compatible with other manufacturers equipment.īottom line, you can't use an AirPort Express or any other Apple base station for that matter to "extend" the wireless network created by a non Apple device. The previous post referred to a situation where a non Apple product was functioning as a base station, creating a wireless network. The "extend" feature will only work among compatible Apple devices, not those of other manufacturers. This would result in the best wireless performance. Yes, you could use an Apple base station to broadcast the wireless signal and configure another Apple device like an Express to "extend" the network. "If so, then could you use one as the base and the other as the repeater" But you don't want it creating another separate network if you are trying to "extend" the network created by another Apple base station. Yes, in this setting it is normally connected to a modem and it creates the wireless network. "Isn't it possible to create a network with an airport express?"
